Horsemastership Programme of Monthly Events

Our Horsemastership Programme helps our graded riders learn about horse care and riding in a structured but fun way! Each month we focus on a different topic. The events are practical and hands-on, and at the end of each one you have the opportunity to take a test to earn a badge. 

The next events are as follows:

Perfect Paddock: Friday 26 June - 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm

We'll be looking at what makes the perfect paddock for a horse, and what things we should consider, to keep our horses safe and happy.

Feeding: Friday 31 July - Time tbc

We'll be finding out about the basic rules of feeding horses and how to recognise different feedstuffs.

Plaiting: Friday 18 September - 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm

In this hands-on session we'll be learning about why we plait horses and ponies and about the different types of plaits we can use. Then we'll be having a go at producing our own perfect plaits!

Colours & Markings: Friday 30 October - Time tbc

We'll be learning how to correctly describe equine colours and markings, and when we might need to use those terms.

Horse Clothing: Friday 27 November - 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm

We'll be looking at horse clothing, including different types of rugs, masks and other items you might find in a horse's wardrobe; finding out how to fit them and why we use them, before getting hands-on putting on and removing rugs.

Tacking Up: Friday 21 February 2025

We'll be learning how to correctly and safely tack up and untack horses and ponies.

Points of the Horse: Friday 28 March 2025

How to name the parts of a horse, using the correct terminology. This session will aid your understanding of terms that you might hear your instructor or staff use when describing horses on the yard and during lessons.

Care of the Foot: Friday 30 May 2025

We'll be finding out more about equine feet and how we look after them. We'll be learning more about hoof care and finding out about trimming and shoeing. We will also be watching the farrier at work and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Perfect Paddock: Friday 20 June 2025

We'll be looking at what makes the perfect paddock for a horse, and what things we should consider to keep our horses safe and happy.

Poisonous Plants: Friday 25 July 2025

In this session we'll be finding out what plants are poisonous to horses and how to recognise them.

Grooming: Friday 26 September 2025

How to identify items in your grooming kit and how to use them correctly to groom your horse. This will be a hands-on session, grooming ponies.

Building Show Jumps: Friday 31 October 2025

How to design and build a show jumping course, the types of fences we might include, how to space jumps apart for safety, what makes certain jumps more tricky, and considering how a well-designed course can offer a variety of routes and levels of difficulty for the rider and horse. We will also have a go at designing our own courses! This session is for riders aged 11 and older.

Yard Safety: Friday 28 November 2025

Yard Safety is very important! In this session we’ll be looking at what you need to consider and do, to keep yourself and the horses you are caring for, safe at all times on the yard.

Boots & Bandages: Friday 30 January 2026

We'll be exploring the range of boots and bandages that horses can wear and learning why we use boots and bandages and which are most appropriate depending on the situation.

Road Rider: Thursday 2 April & Friday 10 April

Practice session on Thursday 2 April 10.00 am - 12.00 pm
Exam on Friday 10 April 10.00 am - 11.30 am

How to ride safely on the road, use hand signals, recognise hazards and mitigate risk to yourself and others when hacking. This badge will include a ridden test - participants will attend a theory and practice session on one date followed by a ridden test on the second date. Road Rider is only open to existing graded clients, L3 (Outdoor) and over.  Numbers will be limited and it is likely to be oversubscribed. This topic will include a ridden assessment during the second session and you MUST attend both sessions to complete the course.  Participants must achieve a certain standard to receive the badge
As this badge includes a ridden session, the prices are as follows: Members - £20 Non Members - £35

Tack Cleaning: Friday 29 May 2026

We'll be learning the importance of maintaining our tack and how to clean tack correctly. This is a hands-on, practical session where we'll be cleaning saddles and bridles.

How to Book:

Each event costs £10 per person (or £16 including badge) –  but is free for Pegasus and Unicorn members (or £6 including badge).

Road Rider costs £20 for members and £35 for non members as it includes a ridden session.

Mucking Out: Friday 20 February - 12.00 pm - 1.00 pm

We'll be getting hands-on mucking out stables and learning about different types of bedding for horses.
