We have recently nominated Treacle for the British Horse Society’s “Equine Personality of the Year” Award!
Treacle turned 27 in July and during her long career she has taught many children to ride (including 3 of our instructors!). In recent years Treacle has become an outstanding pony for sensory sessions, and ground-based activities. She occasionally enjoys a led hack with someone small, but she no longer participates regularly in riding lessons due to her age. She truly loves children however, so she’s still an important part of our team working with supported learners, school groups and children with SEN.
She is our top pony for children with sensory issues because she’s very careful where she puts her feet and has endless patience with children, giving them confidence and allowing them to connect with her. We find she can reach our non-verbal children with her kind and gentle spirit and it’s magical to watch.
RHEC works directly with schools and support agencies to deliver learning and engagement programmes to help children lacking in confidence, suffering from anxiety, struggling to communicate, or with additional needs or learning difficulties. Treacle is often key to this work. RHEC also has many disadvantaged children regularly visiting our site as part of the Ride High charity and Treacle often works with them too.
We’d like to celebrate Treacle’s outstanding contribution to the local community as a ridden pony and in her current, semi-retired, but perhaps more important role as a sensory pony.
