Aim High, based at the Ride High Equestrian Centre is a tranquil green space where young people can get active, learn new skills and enjoy being outdoors. The Centre is set in 37 acres of countryside in the heart of central Milton Keynes, easily accessible by bus and train.
Learning real-world skills outside of the classroom enables participants to reach their potential socially, emotionally and academically.
We have extensive experience delivering tailored programmes for children and young people, recognising that horses and the outdoor environment provides an amazing way to learn vital skills and we are excited to be collaborating with Haddon Training Limited to deliver an Alternative Education Provision that will provide students with valuable skills and the option to gain qualifications and experience that will improve their employment prospects in the equine industry.
Our team are experienced working with SEND individuals and will work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure that each student has a personalised and appropriate educational programme that will meet student needs with due regard to safeguarding, risk assessments and expected outcomes.
Young people aged between 14 – 25 years with an existing EHCP. Students must be at least 14 years old to enrol (if they have a birthday just after the start date then we normally can adjust a little). They can attend until 25 years old when their EHCP comes to an end.
Our Alternative Education Provision is primarily for children and young people who because of exclusion, illness or other reasons such as SEND or SEMH, would not otherwise receive suitable education. This might include:
The courses have been designed specifically for those with SEND or additional needs. Students will complete a range of practical and theoretical work to build a portfolio to submit at the end of the academic year. This can be done with videos/ photos/ witness statements/ audio recordings and many other ways to meet the needs of each student. The majority of the time will be in the practical learning environment and there will be some additional class time to assist with constructing the student’s portfolio. There are no exams.
The Level 1 course is considered full time and is run over 1 or 2 years with students attending 3 days a week. The course is structured within the academic year of 36 weeks.
Find out more about our Level 1 Horse Care Programme.
The course is free to the student (and the parent or carers). It is funded by the Local Authority via an EHCP. (If you are from the LA please contact us directly for up to date costings).
Yes, that is how the Local Authority fund the student. If they don’t have an EHCP, they will need to apply for one (they can take months and may have to wait until the next academic year) before applying to us. Some of our students my apply via EOTAS (Education Other Than At School). The courses are designed especially to support those with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) and SEMH (social, emotional and mental health needs) needs.
These can be continued here with us if they have not been complete at school (there is an additional charge to the Local Authority).
No! just a willingness to learn and enjoy being outdoors.
In certain circumstances yes they can attend both provisions – that is up to their Local Authority to agree.
There will be a maximum of 6 students and 2 staff for a session, there will be regular 1:1 time with each student.
The course is a maximum 15 hours per week and that is normally completed over 3 days and this is classed as full time education provision.
If a session runs over a lunch period there is a ½ hour break. All sessions are delivered onsite. This academic year (2025/26) we hope to start after October half term with one group and in the new year with another group. The course will end in July
A variety of practical tasks and theoretical work to build a portfolio to submit at the end of the academic year. The course has been designed especially for those with SEND or additional needs. This can be done with videos/photos/witness statements/audio recordings and many other ways to meet the need of each student. The majority of the time is in the practical outdoor learning environment on the yard with the horses. There is some indoor time to assist with the construction of a portfolio. NO EXAMS!
Students take part in all practical activities to support the need of the horses on a day to day basis: mucking out, grooming, turning horses out, feeding, healthcare tasks and health and safety.
Level 1 courses are either 1 or 2 years and follow the academic year, similar to a school, running from September to July. In 2025 we will run a slightly shortened version due to the later start.
Transport can be provided by the Local Authority (students need to apply directly) and there may be opportunities via Ride High (please ask). There is a regular bus service locally and we are within walking distance of Central MK train station.
